Privacy Policy

KitchenWise is a kitchen inventory app. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. In short: we collect what the app needs to work, we do not sell your data, the free version shows a few ads from Google, and you can delete your account at any time.

What we collect

Account information

Your email address, and a securely hashed password if you sign up with one.
If you sign in with Google or Apple, the account identifier and email that provider gives us. We never receive your password.
Your name, as your Google or Apple account gives it or as you enter it. It is shown to the people you share a shopping list with.
If you use the app as a guest, an anonymous device identifier so your kitchen is still there next time you open the app. It is not linked to your name or email.

What you put in the app

The food items in your kitchen, their quantities, storage locations and expiry dates.
Recipes you save, including ones you import from a web link or a photo, with the link they came from.
The meal plans you create, and shopping lists.
A record of what you consumed or discarded, which is what powers your waste statistics.
Messages you send to the in-app assistant.
What you dictate when you add items by voice, as text once it has been transcribed.

Importing a recipe. When you import a recipe from a web link, our server fetches that page to read the recipe from it, so the website sees a request from our server, not from your phone. If the page doesn't describe the recipe in a standard format, its text is sent to Anthropic to find the recipe in it. When you import from a photo, your phone reads the text first and sends that text to Anthropic; only if it can't read enough is the photo itself sent. We keep the recipe you save and the link it came from, never the photo or the page.

Technical information

Basic app and device information, and error logs, so we can fix crashes.
A push notification token, if you allow notifications, so we can send expiry reminders, and whether this phone schedules its own reminders (so we don't send the same one twice).

Kept on your phone

So the app works without a connection, it keeps a copy of your kitchen, shopping list, meal plan, saved recipes and the recipes you opened recently on your phone, together with any changes you made while offline until they are sent. Expiry reminders are also scheduled on the phone, so they arrive in airplane mode. This copy stays on the device: it is protected by your phone's own security, holds no passwords or sign-in tokens, and is deleted when you sign out or another account signs in on the same phone.

Usage data

To see which features help people waste less, the app records a few anonymous moments — like “added an item by barcode” or “opened a recipe” — along with the app version, whether it is iPhone or Android, and the app's language.

Never sent: your email or name, food or recipe names, what you search for or type, assistant messages, photos, receipts, or your location.

Events use a random ID made on this phone — not your account — and no advertising ID (the ads described below are separate). Turning this off stops collection and deletes anything not yet sent. The switch isShare anonymous usage data in Profile, and it is on unless you turn it off.

Camera. The app asks for camera access to scan barcodes, to read receipts, and to identify food when you add items by photographing your fridge, a shelf or a product. Those last two send the picture to Anthropic to be read; the photo is used to answer that one request and neither we nor they keep it, and it is not used to train their models. We store only the items you go on to confirm — never the image, and there is no photo archive of your kitchen.

Photos. Instead of taking a new picture you can choose a receipt, food or recipe photo already on your phone, which is when the app asks for access to your library. We read only the one image you pick. The app never browses your library and cannot see anything you have not chosen.

Microphone. If you add items by voice, the app records while you are speaking and your device converts the audio to text. On iPhone and iPad that transcription is performed by Apple's speech recognition service, and on Android by Google's, which means the audio is sent to them and handled under their privacy policies. We receive only the resulting text, never the recording, and we do not store the audio. Every voice feature is optional — you can add items by hand.

How we use it

To run the app — store your kitchen, calculate expiry dates, suggest recipes.
To send the expiry reminders you asked for.
To answer your assistant questions with knowledge of what you actually have.
To keep the service secure, including rate limiting and abuse prevention.
To understand aggregate usage — how many people use a feature, not who.

We do not sell your personal information. Your kitchen contents, recipes, lists and assistant messages are never used for advertising and never shared with advertisers.

Advertising

The free version of the app shows a small number of ads from Google AdMob: a sponsored card in the recipe list and a banner on the Alerts screen. There are no full-screen or pop-up ads. Pro and Extra subscribers see no ads, and no ads are shown while you are offline or in the first days after you install the app.

To show and measure ads, Google collects information from your device under its own policy: device and advertising identifiers (on iPhone only if you allow tracking), approximate location derived from your IP address, how you interact with ads, and diagnostics. We do not give Google your name, email, account ID or anything you put in the app. See how Google uses information from apps that use its services.

European Economic Area and UK — the app asks for your consent through Google's consent form before any ad is requested. You can change your choice any time under Ad choices on the app's Privacy screen.
iPhone — iOS asks whether the app may track you across other apps and websites. If you choose not to allow it, you still see ads, but they are not personalised. You can change this in your device Settings.
Everywhere else, including Turkey — ads are not personalised by default.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers, each for a specific job:

Supabase — hosts the database your account and kitchen live in.
Anthropic — powers the in-app assistant, interprets what you dictate, reads the receipt and food photos you take, and turns the recipes you import into recipes you can save. When you send an assistant message, add an item by voice, or photograph your fridge, that text or image and the relevant parts of your kitchen contents are sent to Anthropic to generate a reply. A recipe import sends only the page text, photo text or photo, as described above. None of it is used to train their models.
Apple and Google — transcribe speech to text when you use a voice feature, as described above.
Google AdMob — shows the ads in the free version, as described under Advertising. It receives device information from the ad SDK, not your account or kitchen data.
Sentry — collects crash and error reports so we can fix them. These carry technical details about the failure and your account identifier, not your kitchen contents.
RevenueCat and the Apple App Store / Google Play — handle subscription purchases. Payment details go to Apple or Google, never to us.
Brevo — sends account emails such as password resets.
Expo — delivers push notifications.
Cloudflare — serves this website and product images.
Open Food Facts and similar public product databases — provide the barcode catalog. Lookups are for product identity only.

People you share a shopping list with see your name, the items on the list and who added each one. If you leave the list, the items you added stay on it. If you delete your account, they stay too and show as added by “a former member”.

We may also disclose information if legally required to, or to protect the rights and safety of our users.

How long we keep it

Your data stays as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your personal data and kitchen contents are deleted. Anonymized, aggregated statistics that cannot identify you may remain. Backups roll off on their own schedule, generally within 30 days.

A meal plan is deleted 14 days after its date.
Recipes you save, including imported ones and the link they came from, stay until you delete them or your account.
A shopping-list invite code is kept for 30 days after it is used, expires or is revoked, and then deleted.
Anonymous usage data is kept for 13 months and then deleted. It can't be tied to your account, so deleting your account doesn't delete it — we couldn't find which events were yours.

Your choices

Access and correction — most of your data is visible and editable directly in the app.
Deletion — you can delete your account from the app, which removes your data. You can also email us.
Notifications — turn expiry reminders off in the app or in your device settings.
Usage data — turn off Share anonymous usage data in Profile, or on the app's Privacy screen.
Ads — change your ad consent under Ad choices on the Privacy screen (EEA and UK), allow or refuse tracking in iPhone Settings, reset or delete your advertising ID in Android settings, or remove ads with Pro or Extra.
The copy on your phone — signing out deletes it.
Camera, microphone and photos — all optional. Refuse or revoke any of them in your device settings and the app still works; you just add items by hand.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under the GDPR, the Turkish KVKK, or similar laws — including the right to a copy of your data, to object to processing, or to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. Contact us and we will help.

Security

Connections are encrypted in transit. Passwords are stored hashed, never in plain text. Access to production data is limited to those who need it. No system is perfectly secure, but we take this seriously and fix problems quickly when we find them.

Children

KitchenWise is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us data, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
